I have a theory as to why we are not performing well in continental football.
The Uganda Cranes stole our swagger.
Swagger means to be cool or in the know and many other things I can't explain here.
Over the years and barring Gor Mahia's famous win in the 80's, we have been really bad in continental action. Don't let me move over to the Harambee Stars.
Even recently, when our supposed top flight league has improved, we are still struggling to make a mark regionally, let alone in Africa.
Our champions Tusker FC get beat by funny looking clubs and the Harambee Stars can't even beat Somalia on a plate.
Why? I blame the Cranes.
Good players
I have watched football an awful long time and to be honest, you will struggle to find players as good as we have here.
That is in every aspect, physically, technically and in terms of pace.
But every time we play, you wish we could not, to avoid embarrassing scenes.
We look like we are scared to do anything and even if we try play something cute, we fail miserably.
It is like we are not sure of ourselves, which is what the Cranes were a few years back.
How come their revival has coincided with our decline?? I want to know??
Expectations
Maybe, we the fans have placed too much expectation on our players.... but no, I will blame the Ugandans.
Or maybe, we are not good enough.. no no no, the Ugandans.
I do beleive we are good, but we do not think we are, or feel we just can't play well... How come the Ugandans who were so poor do very well nowadays? How come they even beat us in a marathon??
We have taken over all their past traits because If and when we play, we are always looking for excuses to give, just like they used to do. We are mediocre, just like they were.
We just do not want to think we can win just like the Cranes were a few years back.
Is something amiss here??
Stole our fire
The Uganda Cranes play Zambia in an AFCON qualifier this weekend and before the match, a key player Geoffrey Walusimbi said of the Zambians.
They are not as good as people say they are. We will definitely beat them, by what score, I do not know.
We will beat them though.
That is what they have and that is why they are playing Zambia, we on the other hand are just scared stiff of ourselves, we can't even beat Namibia and you ask what the major problem is??
A few years back we used to be bullish and proud, now we are toothless.
I blame the Ugandans... What did they do to us???
