On Sunday 23 September 2012, close to 5000 fans will attend the prestigious Safaricom 7's rugby tournament at the Nyayo National Stadium but the epic title race between Nairobi city's two biggest football teams will always look destined to come down to a sprint fight as upto 50,000 fans are expected to fill the 60,000 Moi International Stadium.

REASON? Mashemeji Derby.

Neither Gor Mahia or AFC Leopards would have thought the derby at this time at Kasarani to be a title decider, but it appears that way as the two biggest clubs in Kenya meet with just 6 games left, considering that latter's game with Western Stima at Nakuru's Afraha Stadium will have been played. With Jan Koops' men leading their bitter rivals by just two points, the coach captured the importance of the game when he described it as the biggest ever derby, while there is a strong argument to say its the most significant fixture in ten years, considering what is at stake.

The battle for the title has ebbed and flowed throughout the season, one minute it looked like Leopards would run away with it, the next  minute, Tusker thought they would defend it and now the in- form Gor seem set to render the derby inconsequential.

Different scenarios

As it stands, both sides can rightly say their destiny is in their own hands and that the other strong favourites are mere pace setters.

Leopards' superior goal difference means they will win the title if we assume they get all the points at Afraha against stubbon Stima and beat Gor Mahia at Kasarani and take maximum points in the remaining 4 of 5 matches. For Gor, if AFC fail to collect maximum points at Afraha and beat their rivals at Kasarani, then I see the Green Army running away with the title at the City Stadium against Thika United.

The two Tacticians (Jan Koops and Zdravko Logarusic) have different views as far as the destination of the title is concerned and as per the Sunday derby too.

East Africa is yet to watch the biggest derby ever.
