An own goal and a fourth strike of the tournament for Salah Ibrahim were all Sudan needed in their GOtv CECAFA Senior Challenge quarter final to see off pre tournament favorites Ethiopia 2 - 0 at the Mombasa County Stadium on Sunday 8 December.
The Walya Antelopes showed early intent with Yousuf Yassin testing Sudan keeper Abdelrahman Aliwith a low shot in the second minute but the custodian’s outstretched leg turned the ball away before his defence raced in to clear.
Bargecho own goal
After sustained moments of pressure it was Sudan who took the lead, and from a highly unlikely source as Salahadin Bargecho turned the ball into his own net off a Sudan corner.
Four minutes later Yasin got an opening and indeed raced in to put the ball to the back of the net but his effort was flagged offside as Ethiopia upped the ante.
The striker turned well again in the 32nd minute to shoot goal wards but his effort this time round flew narrowly over the target and Sudan managed to hold onto the lead to the break.
The tournament’s top scorer Salah Ibrahim raced in well on the 69th minute to meet Miazz Abdelrahman’s header and with the keeper well off his line the lanky forward took a deft touch to loop the ball over him for the second goal.
Sudan almost grabbed a third through substitute Abdelmonem Mohamed but his shot from about six yards out was straight at the Ethiopian keeper.
The Falcons of Sudan managed to hold on to their two – goal cushion to set up a date with Chipolopolo of Zambia in the semi final slated for Tuesday 10 December at the Mombasa County Stadium.
