Fifa hands life ban to Ghana referee for fixing world cup qualifier

FIFA Disciplinary Committee has cracked the whip on Ghanaian referee Joseph Odartei Lamptey and banned him from taking part in any kind of football-related activity at any level. 

The match official was found guilty of manipulating the outcome of 2018 world cup qualifier between hosts South Africa and Senegal last November which the former win 2-1.

-The official was found guilty of breaching art. 69 par. 1 (unlawfully influencing match results) of the FIFA Disciplinary Code during the 2018 FIFA World Cup Russia™ qualifying match between South Africa and Senegal on 12 November 2016, Fifa statement partly reads.

The referee made a wrong decision to award South Africa a penalty in the 42nd minute which Bafana Bafana skipper Thulani Hlatshwayo calmly slotted in.


Senegal filed an appeal and Caf suspended the official. Fifa has promised a final decision regarding the match.

-Further information concerning the South Africa v. Senegal match in question will be provided once the decision becomes final and binding. Burkina Faso lead group D with four points same as South Africa but enjoy a superior foal difference while Senegal come third with three points.
