Barca’s centre-back Gerard Pique has reportedly labelled teammate and all-time La Liga top goalscorer Lionel Messi “the best player in history” in the wake of the Catalans’ 4-2 victory over Valencia.
“Leo” scored a brace to put his team within striking distance of current league leaders and perennial rivals Real Madrid, bringing his tally for the season to 25 and placing him first in goals scored in the La Liga.
Pique, who has played for the Spanish giants since 2008, admitted that though having witnessed Messi’s brilliance over the years would make others view his performance as normal, recreating the five-time Ballon dÓr’s achievements when he eventually exits the sport will be arguably impossible.
Eight La Liga titles, four Champions League titles and four Copas del Rey trophies amongst numerous other honours undoubtedly strengthen Pique’s case for the striker who holds the record for most goal scored in the La Liga in a single season (50) and in European football in a single season (73).
